Special Course Offerings Spring, 2008

  • All Special Programs are open to persons 55 or older.
    Prior Registration is Required. A $10 fee per semester is now required to be an OLLI at UK Donovan Scholar and to process your request for Self Enrichment Classes. Please enclose your check with your registration form.
  • You will receive a name tag with your registration confirmation. Please wear it to class for each session to identify yourself as an OLLI at UK Donovan Scholar.
  • When you enroll for a class that requires a risk release form (fitness, line dancing, yoga) we will send one with your confirmation to sign and return before the class begins.

Note: Classes are cancelled  when Fayette County Schools are closed due to bad weather. Saturday classes are cancelled if Lexington Community College is closed due to weather conditions. Monday class will not meet on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Check with your class instructors for other days that your class will not meet.

Special Benefits of being a Donovan Scholar

Donovans enrolling in self enrichment classe(es) or an academic course at UK may enroll in Swim Time, Walking Time or join the Johnson Recreational Center. An eligibility list is sent each semester with the names of the currently enrolled students. To be currently enrolled, you must select a class(es) and pay the $10 fee.

Swim Time: Lancaster Aquatic Center, corner of University and Complex Drives The LAC has open swim hours for enrolled Donovan Scholars to enjoy. A schedule of open swim times may be requested from the LAC office facility manager in the pool lobby area.

Walking Time: Monday thru Friday 11:00–1:00 Nutter Field House 1401 Sports Center Drive Set your own schedule and your own pace on the Indoor Running Track. Donovans use Lanes 4, 5, & 6, and walk counter-clockwise. If facility is closed for UK camps, a note will be posted on the door.

Johnson Recreational Center: You may become a member of the Johnson Recreation Center for a reduced fee. The Center offers a full range of fitness equipment and classes plus a climbing and bouldering center.

  • Introduction to Computers: 1/12, 1/19, 1/26, 2/2  A four session exploration of computer components, their manipulation and the basic housekeeping functions in the use of the home computer.  Note:  It is important to attend all four sessions to receive the greatest benefit from this class. 

  • Microsoft Word:  2/16, 2/23, 3/1, 3/8  A four session exercise involving the use of Word for basic word processing at home; the emphasis is on creating, editing and formatting of documents employing Word’s built in tools.  Note:  It is important to attend all four sessions to receive the greatest benefit from this class.

  • Computer Security: 3/22  A three hour introduction to establishing privacy on the home computer, utilizing passwords, virus scanning software, and firewall protection against intruders and identify thieves.

  • Internet & Email: 3/29  A three hour review of the techniques employed in browsing the Internet, including a discussion of the proper use of eMail software and WebMail.

  • Digital Photography: 4/12  A three hour look at what you can do with your photo images after the images are transferred from your camera to your computer.

  • Introduction to Ebay: 4/19  A three hour discussion of the techniques required to join eBay, buy and sell merchandise, and the precautions you should take to protect against fraudulent transactions.
